During the past few years the Kunej family has been intensively modernising the technological equipment and developing a modern wine cellar that can produce wine at highest possible quality standards. The new cellar also expanded the production capabilities of Kunej's so they are now able to process the grape from other chosen vineyards nearby, besides their own.
The Kunej Vineyards are situated in Posavje (Sava River Valley), the most south-easterly of Slovenia's three main wine regions. The Sava Valley is known for its premium white wines and aromatic light reds. The carefully tended soil and the excellent climatic conditions of the Bizeljsko-Sremic sub-region of the Sava Valley make it ideal for growing various premium varieties: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Muscat, Pinot Noir, Zweigelt, and Modra Frankinja. The warmth of the sun and the coolness of the air produce quality table wines, while the length of the growing season enables selected varieties to stay on the vine and gain the botrytis character critical for successful dessert wines. And Kunej knows how to capitalize on these gifts: their 2000 Botrytis Riesling recently won the title of The Knight Champion of all Slovenian Rieslings.

Among the wines that Kunej produces, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling are the most highly regarded whites, while Modra Frankinja is the standout red. Responding to an eager market, Kunej has just introduced a new red wine called Levin. |
